A new CBS Poll shows Americans overwhelmingly rejecting the Trump plan to ban Muslims because they believe that it runs contrary to the founding principles of the country.

According to the latest CBS News poll, only 36% of those surveyed supported banning Muslims from the US. Fifty-eight percent opposed the ban. Support for the ban was highest among Republicans (54%) and Independents (35%). Seventy-three percent of Democrats, 59% of Independents, and 38% of Republicans opposed the ban.

The American people also rejected Trump’s reasoning for the proposed ban. By a margin of 46%-28%, those surveyed said that banning Muslims would have no effect on keeping Americans safer from terrorism. Once again, Republicans were on the wrong side of the rest of the country as 45% felt that a ban would make America safer.

The bigger problem for Republicans is a majority of their own supporters don’t believe that the ban would be consistent with the nation’s founding principles. Fifty-one percent of Republicans believe that a ban is not consistent with founding principles. By a margin of 67%-25%, Americans believe that a ban would go against the founding principles. Large majorities of Democrats (78%) and Independents (69%) felt that a ban on Muslims would go against the country’s founding principles.

In total, the numbers paint a picture of a disaster in the making for the Republican Party. What may surprise some is that Donald Trump is not the source of the problem. The issue remains that the Republican Party is completely out of step with the majority of the country.

Poll after poll reveals that the overall support for Republican positions ranges from 30%-36%. By pushing away women, Hispanics, African-Americans, and Muslims, Republicans are making their party smaller.

Donald Trump isn’t the only reason Republicans are poised to lose in 2016. Trump is flourishing because of the party’s support of racist and bigoted policies. Trump is only a symptom of a much larger GOP disease.

Even if Republicans get rid of Trump, they will continue to be doomed by the backwards bigotry of a substantial chunk of their party.
