Donald Trump’s opinions on climate change are well-documented.
While 70 percent of Americans accept the settled science that Earth’s climate is changing, Trump believes it’s a hoax. In a 2012 tweet, he even floated the idea that global warming is simply a Chinese conspiracy to steal U.S. manufacturing jobs.
Cold and snowy weather? Trump thinks that’s all the proof we need to conclude that climate change isn’t really happening.
Turns out that, like the weather in my hometown of Cleveland, the opinions of this self-serving buffoon are subject to constant change – especially when it means Trump has money at stake.
According to a new report from Politico, Trump has applied for a permit that would allow his seaside golf course and resort in Ireland to construct a coastal wall to prevent erosion and protect his property. The main justification for the project, according to the permit Trump filed, is climate change and its consequences, including rising sea levels and extreme weather.
Former South Carolina Republican Rep. Bob Inglis, a conservative in favor of acting to slow climate change, called Trump’s efforts “diabolical,” according to Politico.
“Donald Trump is working to ensure his at-risk properties and his company is trying to figure out how to deal with sea level rise,” Inglis said, according to the report. “Meanwhile, he’s saying things to audiences that he must know are not true. … You have a soft place in your heart for people who are honestly ignorant, but people who are deceitful, that’s a different thing.”
In public, Trump denies the reality of global warming to win the support of right-wing mobs who long ago stopped caring about scientific evidence. When he privately wants to protect his own property, the reality TV star cites the dire threat of climate change.
This is just the latest proof that Donald Trump has no core values. He doesn’t care about policy or science or making America great. He makes it up as he goes along and says whatever is necessary to fill arenas and win votes.
The joke is on his supporters, who are merely pawns in Trump’s neverending mission to remain rich and relevant.
