The Bernie Sanders campaign says that back-channel conversations are underway for the potential Bernie Sanders vs. Donald Trump presidential debate.
The Hill reported:
Bernie Sanders’s campaign manager says “back-channel conversations” are underway with Donald Trump’s staff about setting up a bipartisan debate between the two presidential candidates.
“I think it would benefit voters from across the country and I have to believe it would be one of the most-watched debates in presidential politics,” Jeff Weaver said Thursday on MSNBC.
“Let’s see if he has the courage to go one-on-one with Bernie Sanders,” he added.
The Trump campaign has spent the day trying to reframe Trump’s comments about debating Sanders as a joke the candidate made on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, so the odds of this debate actually ever happening aren’t good.
It is likely that the Republican nominee shot off his mouth on live television with no intention of ever backing it up. The only reason that Trump might do the debate is to generate oodles of free publicity for himself. Sen. Sanders would do the debate because he is desperate to try to convince Democrats that he would be a better nominee than Hillary Clinton.
If the debate did become a reality, it would be the perfect ending to a presidential primary cycle that has been more of a circus than an election.
