Apple has taken a stronger stance than other corporate giants against Trump and his Republican convention by announcing that they will not provide money or technology to Trump’s Cleveland self-love fest.
Apple has told Republican leaders it will not provide funding or other support for the party’s 2016 presidential convention, as it’s done in the past, citing Donald Trump’s controversial comments about women, immigrants, and minorities.
Unlike Facebook, Google and Microsoft, which have all said they will provide some support to the GOP event in Cleveland next month, Apple decided against donating technology or cash to the effort, according to two sources familiar with the iPhone maker’s plans.
Apple’s political stand against Trump, communicated privately to Republicans, is a sign of the widening tensions between Silicon Valley and the GOP’s bombastic presumptive nominee.
Facebook, Google, and Microsoft also will not be giving Trump’s convention any money, but they will be providing technology. Apple’s stance deserves praise and should be emulated by other corporate giants. Corporations have got to learn that associating their products with Trump in any way will tarnish their brands in the eyes of consumers.
There will be a price to be paid with consumers for every shot of a Google, Facebook, or Microsoft logo near Trump at the Republican convention. Donald Trump represents a bigoted, closed-minded, walled off mentality supported by a backbone of bigotry, racism, and xenophobia that goes against everything that forward thinking technology companies stand for. Apple has placed its values over cheap publicity, and here’s hoping that others wake up and follow their lead.
