President-elect Donald Trump accused New Hampshire, Virginia, and California of voter fraud. Officials in all three states have released statements denouncing the President-elect’s baseless conspiracy theory.
Trump tweeted:
California Secretary of State Alex Padilla tweeted:
Virginia Department of Elections Commissioner Edgardo Cortés said, “The claims of voter fraud in Virginia during the Nov. 8 election are unfounded. The election was fair and all votes cast by eligible voters were accurately counted.”
New Hampshire Deputy Secretary of State David Scanlan, told Politico, “We have heard claims like this in the past, relative to our elections, but we have been provided no evidence that suggests that there is voter fraud on a widespread scale in New Hampshire. When comments like that are made,” he added, “we become very concerned about the perception, which sometimes is more important than the reality when it comes to conducting elections because the voters need to feel confident that their votes are counted accurately.”
The situation is unprecedented in modern American political history. The president-elect is attacking the integrity of the electoral process in states that he lost, and the states are responding by denouncing the incoming president’s baseless conspiracy theories.
It can be argued that there hasn’t been this much division between a group of states and the man who will be running the executive branch of the federal government since the Civil War. When Donald Trump talks about “bringing the nation together,” it is wise to keep in mind that he is the person who is responsible for much of the current division.
The states are sending the message that Trump is not going to be allowed to lie at will as president. The nation is moving closer to uncharted waters as divisions that were once partisan is turning into a full-scale revolt against a president-elect who refuses to stop making things up.
