Democrats Are Surging As Voter Demand For Democratic Congress Skyrockets Ahead Of Midterm

A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found that Democrats hold a double-digit lead in both the generic midterm ballot and voter enthusiasm.

The Wall Street Journal reportedz, “Asked which party they prefer to lead Congress after next year’s midterms, 50% said the Democrats and 39% said Republicans. That 11-point lead is wider than the 7-point advantage Democrats held in October, and it is the first double-digit advantage for the party since late 2008, ahead of the Democrats’ win in the presidential election that year. The poll also found that 59% of Democratic voters are showing the highest levels of interest in the coming midterms, compared with 49% of Republicans.”

Polling has consistently shown Democrats with a double-digit lead in voter preference for control of Congress. The American people have gotten a taste of Republican governance, and they realize that putting Republicans in charge means that your taxes are going to go up and your healthcare is going to either go away or get a lot more expensive.

Voters preferring the out of power party is nothing new, but thanks to the unpopularity of Trump, the normal midterm anti-presidential trend has been put on steroids. Democrats have helped themselves by recruiting really good candidates across the country, and they have tapped into the electricity in their base with record-setting small donor fundraising.

Wave elections don’t just happen because incumbents are unpopular. A wave forms when an incumbent party is struggling to motivate their own voters. It has been a consistent trend in 2017 that Democrats have run well in special elections because Republicans aren’t motivated to vote.

Democrats are energized, and 2018 can’t here soon enough for a nation that desperately wants to put a legislative check on Trump.
