Trump Just Asked For The Constitution To Be Changed So He Can Be President For 16 Years

At a Rose Garden event that was supposedly about tax cuts, Trump went off script and asked a Republican Congressman if the law could be changed so that he can remain in the White House for 16 years.

Trump said, “We’re cutting record numbers of regulations. We’ve cut more regulations in a year and a quarter than any administration, whether it’s four years, eight years, or in one case 16 years. Should we go back to 16 years? Can we do that? Congressman, can we have that extended? You know the last time I jokingly said that, the papers started saying he’s got despotic tendencies. No, I’m not going to do it. Unless you want to do it. That’s okay.”

Trump was basically saying, of course, I don’t want to be president for 16 years, but if you were to change the law, I would stick around for 16 years.

Trump has no idea that a presidential term was never 16 years. No president has served for 16 years. FDR won a fourth term, but he died before it was finished. Trump also has no idea that is the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution, not Congress that set the presidential term limit. Congress can’t just change the Constitution. Trump admires authoritarians and dictators. If Trump could be like his hero Putin, and never leave office, that is exactly what he would do.

Donald Trump will be lucky if he makes it through one term. His talk of staying president for 16 years is a delusional fantasy that reveals where his impulses toward power rest.

Trump may be stupid, but he is also very dangerous.
