Trump said: A lot of people have come out strongly on that. I thought I made myself very clear by having just reviewed the transcript. I have to say, I came back, and I said what is going on? What’s the big deal? So I got a transcript I reviewed, and I went out, and I reviewed a clip of an answer that I gave. And I realized that there is a need for some clarification. It should have been obvious, I thought it would be obvious, but I would hike to clarify just in case it wasn’t. In a key sentence in my remarks, I said the word “Would” instead of “wouldn’t.” The sentence should have been I don’t see why it wouldn’t be Russia. So just to repeat it, I said the word would instead of wouldn’t, and the sentence should have been, and I thought I would be maybe a little bit unclear on the transcript or unclear on the actual video, the sentence should have been, I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be Russia. Sort of a double negative. So you can put that in, and I think that probably clarifies things pretty good by itself.
Wallace: Yeah, that’s a lie. You know how long it takes when you’re a president to get a transcript or clip of your press conference? About 60 seconds.
Trump is lying, but many Americans wouldn’t know this, which is why it is valuable to have people who worked in the White House on cable news. Only someone who has worked in the White House would be able to shoot down such an obvious, and frankly, dumb, lie so quickly. Trump meant what he said because he made the same point several times during the same press conference.
It was a lie that only a person who has gotten away with lying his whole life would think that people would believe.
Trump has made his Russia problem even worse. First, he betrayed his country, and then he told the most idiotic lie possible to cover his tracks.
The situation has blown up in Trump’s face as the American people were finally confronted with the reality that the president might be working for a hostile foreign power, and there really nothing that Trump can say to change that perception.
