According to a press release from MSNBC as provided to PoliticusUSA:
MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” was the #1 cable news program in A25-54 for the 1st quarter of 2019, beating all other FOX News and CNN shows, according to Nielsen data from December 31, 2018, through March 28, 2019. “Maddow” averaged 552,000 in A25-54 viewers (vs. FOX News’ 542,000 for Hannity and 528,000 for Hannity with Specials at 9pm, FOX News’ 534,000 at 8pm and CNN’s 367,000 at 9pm). Additionally, this quarter was “Maddow’s” highest-rated quarter ever in total viewers, averaging 3.07M total viewers at 9 pm (vs. FOX News’ 3.06M for Hannity with Specials and CNN’s 1.3M).
Maddow’s dominance with viewers age 25-54 bodes well for her future viewership. These viewers have been a very stable source of growth for The Rachel Maddow Show going back to when she was drawing one million viewers a night before Trump. Fox News is still struggling to attract younger viewers, and their problems have worsened under Donald Trump.
Trump’s fans are the core of Fox News’s viewership. Fox’s demographics mirror the Republican Party base. Fox News has the oldest audience of any network on television. They are white. They are conservative, and they are rural. For years, Fox has been trying to figure out a way to attract younger viewers to their programming, and they have consistently failed.
As for Rachel Maddow, her show is not showing any signs of slowing down even after Mueller filed his report. The Rachel Maddow Show’s growth was always about more than Mueller and Russia. Rachel Maddow is the perfect counter to a White House where false information provides the basis for all communications.
Mueller might be done, but Rachel Maddow is just getting warmed up.
