Rachel Maddow Explains How Democrats Are As United As Ever To Make Trump A One-Term President

Rachel Maddow explained on Monday that even though the number of Democratic candidates is through the roof as 2020 approaches, the party appears to be as unified as ever to defeat Donald Trump – no matter who the nominee is.

As the MSNBC host pointed out, a majority of the Democratic candidates have already signed onto an Indivisible pledge to wholeheartedly endorse the eventual nominee.

The quickness with which these candidates are signing onto the pledge demonstrates that despite differences among the Democratic candidates, they all agree that defeating Trump in 2020 is critical.

“A majority of the candidates right now have pledged that as soon as there is a nominee, they will endorse immediately,” Maddow said. “They will completely put themselves at the disposal of the campaign of the nominee, no matter who it is, full stop.”

Maddow said:

[Bernie Sanders] was the first to sign on the day the pledge was unveiled on Thursday of last week. But then on Friday, Cory Booker signed it, and then Jay Inslee signed it, and then Julian Castro signed it, and then Pete Buttigieg, and then Elizabeth Warren, and then Kamala Harris, and then this weekend on Saturday Amy Klobuchar signed and then Tim Ryan signed, and now today Kirsten Gillibrand signed, John Hickenlooper signed. It’s getting to the point now where candidates are not just signing this, they are photographing themselves signing it. Photographing their signature on it. Putting it out on social media, letting you know they have made this pledge. Which means a majority of the candidates right now have pledged that as soon as there is a nominee, they will endorse immediately. They will completely put themselves at the disposal of the campaign of the nominee, no matter who it is, full stop. … Again, they’ve got more than 10,000 regular people signed on to their grassroots version of this thing, but the candidates’ pledge already has 11 of the 20 declared Democratic candidates signed on, and counting. For now, at least, that means they’ve got a majority of the declared Democratic candidates for president signed on.

The stakes are too high for a 2016 repeat

After Donald Trump has spent the last two years further dividing the country and weakening our institutions, the vast majority of Democratic voters have come to the realization that they must unite immediately following the primary process – no matter who wins.

As I wrote over the weekend, a healthy debate over policy is important during the Democratic primary, but a dragged-out fight over which candidate is pure enough to be the nominee is counterproductive.

At the end of the day, each of the 20 candidates would make a more competent and decent president than Trump, and it’s a good sign that the Democratic hopefuls are recognizing that early in the process.

When the Democratic primary contest concludes and one man or woman is left standing, it is critical that the losing candidates and their supporters line up behind the nominee.

Too much is at stake to let Democratic sour grapes give Donald Trump another term in the White House.
