Trump Shows He Doesn’t Know How Impeachment Works

Trump thinks that the courts can block impeachment and that high crimes are the same as criminal offenses.

Trump said, “I don’t see how they can because they’re possibly allowed although I can’t imagine the courts allowing it. I’ve never gone into it. I never thought that would even be possible to use that word. It’s a dirty, filthy, disgusting word and it had nothing to do with me. So I don’t think so. Because there was no crime. You know, it’s high crimes and not with or it’s high crimes and misdemeanors. There was no high crime and there was no misdemeanor so how do you impeach based on that? And it came out that there was nothing to do with Russia, the whole thing is a scam. It’s a giant presidential harassment and honestly, I hope it goes down as one of my greatest achievements because I’ve exposed corruption, I’ve exposed corruption like nobody knew existed.”

Trump gave an explanation that was so off base that one suspects he has never seen impeachment in a movie or on TV. The courts can’t block impeachment. There is no legal standard for high crimes and misdemeanors, so it doesn’t matter if there was a crime committed or not. The House decides what conduct meets the high crimes and misdemeanors standard in their articles of impeachment. In Trump’s case, there is evidence that he committed several crimes from the hush money payoff to Stormy Daniels to obstruction of justice, so Trump is the last person in the world who should be hanging his defense on a crime being required for impeachment.

The president is so ignorant that he doesn’t know impeachment works.

Trump is clueless, and if impeachment comes, he will have no idea what hit him.
