Trump lost big in court on Friday as a federal appeals court ruled that his accountants must turn over eight years of his personal and business tax returns to Congress.

Buzzfeed News reported, “A federal appeals court ruled Friday that President Donald Trump’s accounting firm must comply with a congressional subpoena for the president’s financial records, handing Trump the latest setback in his effort to stop House Democrats from gathering information about him in their impeachment inquiry. The US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit rejected Trump’s argument that the House Oversight Committee lacked authority to issue a subpoena to the president’s longtime accounting firm, Mazars USA LLP.”

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said in a statement provided to PoliticusUSA, “Today’s ruling is a resounding victory for the rule of law, our Constitution and its system of checks and balances. It is a victory for our democracy, as the courts reaffirm the Congress’s authority and responsibility to conduct oversight and consider legislation on behalf of the American people. As the Court stated, ‘Contrary to the President’s arguments, the Committee possesses authority under both the House Rules and the Constitution to issue the subpoena, and Mazars must comply.

The Speaker continued, “Armed with the support of the Courts and guided by the wisdom of the Constitution, we will continue to protect our democracy. We salute Chairman Cummings and the Oversight Committee for their outstanding work to honor our Constitution, and thank all Members for their patriotic leadership to defend our Constitution.”

Trump is running out of appeals. He can ask the full three-judge district court panel for a ruling, and if he loses there, which he is expected to do, his last option is to petition the Supreme Court to take up the case. The Mazars subpoena predates the impeachment investigation, but it would not be surprising to see the Supreme Court turn down Trump’s case because the congressional authority to get his tax returns is based on well-founded and established law.

The president has lost big, and his options are very limited going forward.

Since he decided to drag the subpoena for his tax returns through the court system, it is very possible that voters will get to see his tax returns in the middle of the 2020 election.
