The American people, as a collective, are much smarter than many in politics give them credit for. Republicans have been trying to sell the idea of Democrats taking back the House and impeaching Trump as a terrible nightmare that could potentially be unleashed upon society if the blue wave comes.
The country has already been through two Trump impeachments and saw the president not convicted, yet still win a second term in 2024, so impeachment clearly has limits.
After a decade, it is obvious that the dozens of Senate Republicans that it would require to convict and remove Trump are never going to vote to get the president out of the White House.
Impeachment has seemed like a dead issue or, at best, a sub-issue in the midterm election campaign, but it turns out that the worse Trump’s behavior becomes, the more in favor of a third impeachment Americans are.
A new Politico Poll found that a majority of the country supports impeaching Donald Trump:
In total, 54% of Americans — including 81% of voters who plan to support Democrats in the midterms and a quarter of Republican midterm voters — say Trump has committed impeachable offenses, the poll found. More than 41% of respondents said Trump had used the presidency to benefit himself or his family financially, and a third said Democrats should prioritize investigating how he’s enriched himself, while another third said they should focus on probing his immigration crackdown.
Americans have noticed Trump’s corruption and self-enrichment, and they want to send a message.
