House Republicans currently have nothing to campaign on but an extremely unpopular tax-cuts bill for the rich, because Donald Trump had the bright idea of bundling the entire Republican agenda into one piece of legislation that was passed last year.
It was widely expected that the combination of tax cuts for the rich and health insurance and food assistance cuts would be unpopular with voters. The economic boom that Republicans fantasized about never materialized.
House Republicans should be using every second before they have to go campaign in October to build an agenda that would attempt to justify to voters keeping Republicans in power.
However, Donald Trump believes affordability is a hoax, so House Republicans who sold themselves out to Trump long ago are stuck going down with the presidential ship.
That strategy that Mike Johnson has come up with to appeal to voters is to pass a continuing resolution that will fund the government until December, and then cancel the last two scheduled weeks of the legislative session, so that his members can go back home early.
It looks like Republicans are surrendering their majority.
