Crazed Pastor Says “Sodomites” Have Stolen God’s Rainbow

A rainbow for LGBT rights

There has been one constant in my life since Barack Obama was elected president, and that is my thinking that “they did not just go there.” But they did go there. They go there all the time.

They lie brazenly and often, without fear of repercussion. Lies have never been so profitable as now. But lies are the fuel of totalitarianism, not freedom, religious or otherwise. Not just the big lie, but the many little lies the big lie breeds, enslave us.

The eye-catching moment of the day for me is people claiming to represent a religion that has absolutely nothing original about it, that has stolen its trappings, its beliefs, its liturgy, from all the religions that came before it.

I am speaking, of course, of Christianity.

Kevin Boling, whom Right Wing Watch tells us is “a South Carolina pastor and host of the Greenville-based “Knowing The Truth” radio program,” said on his show the other day that the rainbow is a Christian symbol and that the “sodomites” have stolen it: “”the rainbow has been adopted by the sodomites here upon the face of the earth as a symbol of the movement that is actually a movement that will bring about the wrath of God.”

Listen, my friend, to drape yourself in the symbol of God’s wrath being spent when you’re actually using it as a symbol of liberation from God himself and from his Word and from his Commandments, you are heaping to yourself additional condemnation. For the believer, they see in this that there is now no condemnation for us in Christ, but for those who are impenitent, unwilling to come to Christ on his terms, who are celebrating their sin rather than celebrating their savior, for them they are heaping to themselves even more the judgment of God upon them.

Flee the wrath that come, my friend. Flee the wrath that come by coming to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Wow, his Bible must be vastly different than mine. Jesus never mentioned gays, not even once. He sure never mentioned rainbows. He condemned rich people, but not gays. He condemned hypocrites, but not gays.

Boling appeals to a passage from Paul’s letter to the Romans, where Paul condemns everybody on the planet who never heard of his god or Jesus:

And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind and to things that should not be done. They were filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, covetousness, malice. Full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, craftiness, they are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, rebellious toward parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. They know God’s decree, that those who practice such things deserve to die—yet they not only do them but even applaud others who practice them. (Romans 1:28)

So much anger!

And never mind that to counter Boling I could myself appeal to Paul in Acts, who says entirely the opposite about the guilt of Pagans (Acts 14:8-20 and Acts 17:18-34). The Paul in Acts says God recognizes that Pagans didn’t know any better, and how could they? (An eminently more fair position).

Add to that, nobody claiming to represent Christianity has any right to talk about stealing. Without theft, the Pope has no title (it belongs to the Pagan high priest of Rome), and no hat. Without theft, the “Jesus fish” remains a symbol of fertility and representative of a woman’s vagina. Without theft, the Roman emperor Augustus remains the “savior” and “Son of God” he was proclaimed long before Jesus’ birth. Without theft, Christmas is not on December 25 and Easter is not named for a Heathen goddess, Eostre.

The ancient world was lousy with salvation cults and dead and risen gods. You couldn’t take a p*ss without hitting one. As I pointed out yesterday, it was widely noticed in the ancient world that there was nothing new and original about Christian morality either. Early Christianity was informed not only by its Jewish, but by its Pagan context, just as Christianity would later be changed by its contact with the German world.

I might point out here, speaking as the resident Heathen, that the rainbow is the symbol of Bifröst (Beefrost), the rainbow bridge that spans across the space separating Asgard, the home of the gods, and Midgard (our Middle Earth). The more literalist Heathen might even say a rainbow is Bifröst.

It hardly matters. It is even possible that my Heathen ancestors were actually thinking about the Milky Way. They are not here to ask, because Christianity exterminated the Heathen religions like it exterminated the religions of the other Pagan peoples it stole from.

The point here is, you can’t own a rainbow. The rainbow is and has been a lot of things to a lot of people. If you’re taking the rainbow, we want our &%#$ fish back. And everything else you stole from Paganism while you’re at it.

I don’t mean to make this some sort of “neopagan” rant. What I am trying to do through these examples is point out the absurdity of the claims made by people like Boling, who lie for profit, and who can’t even get their own theology right in the process.

The point has been made here and elsewhere that these people aren’t really Christians, or that, by their own logic, they are at most a Christian heresy. They use the trappings of Christianity to justify their hate and bigotry, to give it an aura of sanctity and therefore place it above criticism.

They don’t get away with that here. I’m not a Christian myself and I don’t have to play by their rules. I return what is given, Heathen-style. A surly old son of Odin like me doesn’t worry about hellfire any more than does an atheist.

The only thing that needs be feared in Democracy is the wrath of the voters, ’cause nobody’s god is in the Constitution. And the voters have increasingly turned their wrath on people like Boling. Not to persecute them, as Boling might claim, but to free themselves of the repressive system he represents.
