Women Voters Are Not Impressed By Donald Trump. Just 1 in 5 View Him Favorably

A Quinnipiac Poll reveals a fatal weakness for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Donald Trump garners very little support from women voters. Without significant support from female voters, Trump has almost no hope of building the winning coalition needed to put him in the White House.

The Quinnipiac Poll found that Trump is viewed favorably by just 20 percent of women voters, compared to a whopping 64 percent who have an unfavorable opinion of Trump. Furthermore, in a head to head match-up with Hillary Clinton, the gender gap is truly staggering.

Trump holds his own with male voters, managing a narrow 43-42 edge over Clinton. However, Clinton absolutely crushes him with women voters by a 54-29 margin. The 26-point gender gap cannot be attributed solely to Clinton’s popularity with women voters, since the gender gap is nearly as large when Trump is pitted against Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

In a Trump versus Sanders contest, Trump leads with male voters 44-40 percent, but he gets trounced by female voters 49-31 percent. While all Republican candidates perform significantly worse with women voters than they do with men, Trump appears to be polling especially poorly with women voters.

When a Trump Attorney declared “you cannot rape your spouse”, he did his client no favors with women voters. The lawyer’s comment prompted Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill (D) to tweet:

Most shocking part of this? Trump’s lawyer thinks it’s legal to rape your spouse. Giving Akin a run for his money.

Todd Akin of course, was the GOP Senate candidate in 2012 who lost to McCaskill after arguing that if a rape is a ”legitimate rape”, the female body has ways to shut her down from getting pregnant.

While Trump isn’t necessarily responsible for the words of his lawyer, the attorney’s defense of Trump’s alleged rape of his wife keeps that damaging allegation in the public eye. Trump’s long history of gender-specific hostility towards women may not be something most female voters are familiar with. Nevertheless, at some level, women voters know that Donald Trump does not belong in the White House.

Given Trump’s poor standing with women voters, they not only know he doesn’t belong in the White House, but they will also make sure he doesn’t get there.
