Last updated on July 17th, 2023 at 06:10 pm

On Wednesday morning, Democratic presidential candidate, Martin O’Malley held a press conference outside Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, to show his solidarity with the hotel workers attempting to organize a union, and to take a swipe at Donald Trump on immigration.

Speaking alongside hotel workers and leaders of the Culinary Workers Union Local 226, O’Malley spoke about higher wages for workers and recognizing their right to organize.

Our economy is people. It is all of our people. And there are a couple of things that Donald Trump doesn’t understand…Number one: If we want our economy to grow, then we need to treat our workers with dignity and respect, pay them better, and respect their right to organize. Secondly, in every generation, new American immigrants have made our economy stronger and have made our economy better.

According to the Culinary Union Local 226 website, last year, several Trump Las Vegas employees were unfairly suspended for exercising their legal right to wear union buttons and organize their coworkers.

After the Culinary Union filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) against the Trump Las Vegas, these workers were returned to work with back pay. In June 2015, the Culinary Union filed additional charges with the NLRB asserting that the Trump Las Vegas violated the federally protected rights of workers to participate in union activities. Some of the new charges include incidents of alleged physical assault, verbal abuse, intimidation, and threats by management.

This Friday, Trump International Hotel Las Vegas employees will join with clergy leaders community organizations, elected officials, and local union workers in a march to demand equality.

O’Malley, the former two-term Maryland governor, had been campaigning extensively in Iowa, before heading to Las Vegas and meeting with labor leaders and hotel workers. He now heads to San Francisco to meet with civic tech leaders and fundraisers, then heads back to Iowa to continue campaigning across the state.
