Ted Cruz has his eyes firmly set on the Republican presidential nomination in 2020, but by supporting Donald Trump, Cruz just trashed any hopes that he ever had of being a future Republican nominee.
In a Facebook post, Cruz wrote:
After many months of careful consideration, of prayer and searching my own conscience, I have decided that on Election Day, I will vote for the Republican nominee, Donald Trump.
I’ve made this decision for two reasons. First, last year, I promised to support the Republican nominee. And I intend to keep my word.
Second, even though I have had areas of significant disagreement with our nominee, by any measure Hillary Clinton is wholly unacceptable — that’s why I have always been #NeverHillary.
….
Our country is in crisis. Hillary Clinton is manifestly unfit to be president, and her policies would harm millions of Americans. And Donald Trump is the only thing standing in her way.
A year ago, I pledged to endorse the Republican nominee, and I am honoring that commitment. And if you don’t want to see a Hillary Clinton presidency, I encourage you to vote for him.
Ted Cruz’s conscience told him to support a man who attacked his wife and accused his father of being involved in the JFK assassination.
After not endorsing Trump at the Republican convention, Sen. Cruz was in a prime position to be a favorite for the GOP nomination in 2020. Cruz could have been the far-right Republican who was right on Trump all along after Trump loses, but the Senator from Texas decided that a much more cynical calculation required him to support Trump.
Cruz is supporting Trump because he thinks he will need Trump voters to win the Republican nomination in 2020. Unlike Chris Christie and others who endorsed Trump, Cruz isn’t looking for a job in the Trump administration. Instead, he is looking to poach Trump voter the second after Hillary Clinton is declared the victor on Election Night in November.
Sen. Cruz is misjudging the future direction of his party. The most cynical and self-absorbed politician in the United States just made a play that will ruin his White House dreams.
With one endorsement of Donald Trump, Ted Cruz turned himself into a man without a base and just committed career suicide.
