RNC officials are meeting to discuss what options the party has in case Trump is not the nominee. In other words, the RNC is trying to think of a way to legally ditch Trump.
New York Times reporter Yamiche Alcindor tweeted:
According to the RNC’s own rules, the only way that they can replace Trump is if he quits. There are some RNC rules (8 and 9) that the party could try to invoke, but there is no ruling allowing the RNC to take the nomination away from a nominee. Republican officials most recently explored the possibility of dumping Trump when he attacked the Gold Star Khan family, and they were told that they had to remove Trump by September 1, or he was locked in on the ballot.
The Republican Party’s only option would be to disavow Trump as their nominee and urge Republican voters to write in another option. Pursuing this option would split the Republican base, and hand the White House to Hillary Clinton on a silver platter.
The RNC has shown no concern for the good of the country at any point in this election, so their motivation for trying to get rid of Trump is to save down-ballot Republicans.
If Republicans do try to give Trump the boot, they will end up tied up in court through Election Day. Either way, Donald Trump’s name will remain on the ballot, and there is nothing short of Trump quitting that will allow the party to name a new nominee.
