House Democrat Calls Nunes Meeting on WH Grounds a ‘Cover-Up to a Crime’

California Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell spoke with Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski this morning on MSNBC’s Morning Joe and explained that Rep. Devin Nunes’ meeting on the White House grounds was a “cover-up to a crime.”

Swalwell, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, told the hosts in response to Nunes’ absurd claim “I’m quite sure that I think people in the West Wing had no idea that I was there,” that,

“It’s not an internet cafe. You can’t just walk in and receive classified information. Everyone in the building knows that you’re there in the building.”

Swalwell pulled no punches, explaining that,

“It’s time for Devin Nunes to leave this investigation let alone lead it. So he should be gone. What we saw was going over to the White House he went to receive information…we can receive at the Capitol. We have our own secure facility. If this was done the proper way, they could have brought it over, shared it with both parties of the committee.

“This is done because the White House wanted it to be done. And this is what a cover-up to a crime looks like. We are watching it play out right now.”

In trying to protect Donald Trump, Devin Nunes has succeeded in destroying any hopes of a House investigation into Donald Trump’s collusion with Russia. As Joe Scarborough quipped, Swalwell “can take up golfing now because there’s sure not going to be an investigation in the House.”

However, in doing so, Nunes has not succeeded ultimately in protecting the president but has only fueled more suspicions, especially after suddenly canceling hearings today in a vain attempt to keep Sally Yates from spilling the beans on what she can say about her warnings to Trump.

Nunes has also destroyed the Republican argument that no independent investigation is needed because House and Senate committees can do what is needed. As Swalwell explained,

“A lot of them have said that we don’t need an independent commission because we’re doing the work in the House committee, on the intelligence committee, and so that’s always been the out for not having an independent commission. So I’ve heard frustration that they don’t have that out anymore. So where do we go now?”

There is only one place to go now, and that is an independent commission to investigate collusion between the Trump team and Russia.
