With just a little over a week to go until Alabama votes a new senator into office, President Trump officially endorsed Republican candidate Roy Moore on Monday, despite Moore being accused of sexual assault and harassment by numerous women, some who say they were underage at the time of the alleged abuse.

“Democrats refusal to give even one vote for massive Tax Cuts is why we need Republican Roy Moore to win in Alabama,” Trump tweeted. “We need his vote on stopping crime, illegal immigration, Border Wall, Military, Pro Life, V.A., Judges 2nd Amendment and more. No to Jones, a Pelosi/Schumer Puppet!”
In a second tweet he added, “Putting Pelosi/Schumer Liberal Puppet Jones into office in Alabama would hurt our great Republican Agenda of low on taxes, tough on crime, strong on military and borders…& so much more. Look at your 401-k’s since Election. Highest Stock Market EVER! Jobs are roaring back!”
Moore’s opponent Doug Jones was recently leading in the polls, but the latest numbers put Moore back in the lead. Alabama has no Democratic legislators representing it in any statewide positions and roughly half the population consists of white Evangelicals, making it one of the reddest states in the country.
It’s likely that the president was pleased with Moore regaining ground and capitalized on it by making his support explicit to his supporters.
Trump came close to fully endorsing Moore two weeks ago, telling reporters “we don’t need a liberal democrat in that seat” and repeatedly insisting that the Republican candidate denies the accusations.
Given that Trump himself has been accused of sexual assault by more than 10 women, this outcome should be surprising to no one.
