After Donald Trump tweeted his hopes that “good old global warming” will save the country from cold winter temperatures, Democrats erupted on Thursday.
One Democratic representative called Trump a “child who hates science class,” saying it’s sad that the President of the United States doesn’t instead use his social media platform to help people prepare for the frigid temperatures.
The tweets from Democratic Rep. Kathleen Rice of New York:
One of Trump’s most outspoken critics, Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) also slammed Trump, saying he either “doesn’t understand the science behind climate change, or he is intentionally misleading the American people.”
Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington also teed off on the president, saying he should be able to grasp the difference between weather and the climate. “It isn’t hard,” she said, linking to a NASA article explaining the difference.
Another Democrat – Rep. Don Beyer of Virginia – slammed Trump’s ignorance on climate issues but conceded that he will probably never grasp them on his own. Instead, Beyer said the president needs to surround himself with people who can explain it to him.
The quick and forceful pushback comes after Trump tweeted out the insane suggestion that cold winter temperatures are proof that climate change is a hoax.
As I wrote earlier, none of Trump’s ignorant ramblings on climate change are all that surprising given his track record on this issue, whether it’s his destructive policies since taking office or insane rhetoric over the years.
The tinfoil hat nonsense he spewed on Thursday is par for the course, but now he’s actually in a position to use these crackpot ideas to make public policy – and that’s dangerous. Democrats are right to push back swiftly and forcefully.
