Ex-GOP Rep Predicts Selfish Trump Will End Shutdown So He Can Golf With His Billionaire Buddies

Former GOP congressman David Jolly said on Saturday that Donald Trump’s temper tantrum may have brought about this government shutdown, but his selfishness could end it.

According to the former Republican, Trump knows that until the government is open again, he couldn’t survive the optics of going to his Mar-a-Lago club to golf with his rich friends.

In other words, the president will soon get bored of his shutdown stunt, and it will become more important to him to end it so he can resume his usual holiday golf regimen in Palm Beach.

“He wants to get to Mar-a-Lago and I think as much as he doesn’t care about conventional political optics, the optics of him hanging out with billionaires and golfing in Palm Beach while the government is shut down, is an image that history would remember for decades,” Jolly said.

David Jolly said:

I think Donald Trump loses the politics and the optics of this shutdown. I do think what might solve it is his own selfishness. He wants to get to Mar-a-Lago and I think as much as he doesn’t care about conventional political optics, the optics of him hanging out with billionaires and golfing in Palm Beach while the government is shut down, is an image that history would remember for decades. It would be Bush 41 at the scanner, Bush 43 saying Brownie’s doing a good job at Katrina. They really can’t have that happen. I think we may see them push towards maybe approving the six of the seven bills they’ve already arrived at. They could do that by voice vote, reopen the government there. Maybe punt homeland security for a week or two.

Trump’s own selfishness could end the government shutdown

Trump doesn’t make decisions based on what would be good for the country; he makes them based on what would be best for himself, his business interests and his political fortunes.

In the case of the current government shutdown, Trump thought it would be good politics for him, even though a majority of the country doesn’t support his childish fantasy of a border wall.

What he likely didn’t take into account is, A. He already admitted that it would be his fault if the government shut down; and B. There is no way he could jet down to Mar-a-Lago and golf with his billionaire buddies in the midst of a government shutdown, especially over the holidays.

So, as ex-Republican Rep. David Jolly said, it is the latter reason – not the devastating impact the shutdown will have on hundreds of thousands of federal workers – that will likely push Trump into reopening the government.
