Non-College White Voters Are Abandoning Trump As America Suffers From His Shutdown

Non-college educated white voters have abandoned Donald Trump as he continues to hold the government hostage over his demand for a vanity wall on the southern U.S. border.

According to a new CNN survey released Sunday, Trump‘s approval rating is underwater among white voters without college degrees – one of his strongest areas of support during the 2016 campaign – for the first time since February 2018.

Forty-seven percent of these voters disapprove of the job he is doing, while just 45 percent think he’s doing a fine job.

More stunning, according to CNN, is that this group of voters believes by a 45-39 margin that Trump – not Democrats – is responsible for the government shutdown.

Most Americans – still – don’t want a border wall

If you’re going to shut down the government in order to advance a policy goal, you should probably pick something the American people support. Trump hasn’t done that.

According to the CNN poll, voters – by a 17-point margin – oppose the construction of a wall on the southern border.

As the survey notes, opposition to Trump‘s signature policy proposal has steadily stood near 60 percent, while support for it has struggled to reach the 40 percent mark.

Put simply, the issue that riles up Trump‘s MAGA base most is completely out of step with what the vast majority of the country wants.

Trump’s overall approval rating is tanking

Overall, it’s not just the wall the American people don’t want; it’s Trump. According to CNN, his overall approval rating is tanking.

The survey found that just 37 percent of the country approves of Trump‘s job performance, while 57 percent disapproves. That’s a five-point jump in disapproval since just December.

Ultimately, what Trump thought his shutdown would do – rally the MAGA base to his side – has done just the opposite. Not only has the broader electorate abandoned Trump, but there a signs that his own supporters are cracking, too.
