The FBI Investigation Into Whether Trump Is Working For Russia Could Still Be Ongoing

While we now know that the FBI launched an investigation in 2017 into whether Donald Trump worked on behalf of Russia, it’s unclear exactly how long that inquiry went on – or even if it’s still ongoing.

According to Michael Schmidt, who broke The New York Times story about the investigation, Trump has continued to give the FBI reasons to investigate his behavior and language toward Russia.

During an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, Schmidt openly wondered, “How do you walk away from an investigation like that” when the president continues to sound like a Russian puppet?

Schmidt said:

If you’re a counterintelligence agent at the FBI, and you started this investigation, you worked on it, how do you see the president’s most recent comments? How did you see Helsinki? How did you see the comments about Afghanistan that lined up with the Kremlin’s talking points about why the USSR invaded Afghanistan? How do you walk away from an investigation like that when the president continues to say things like that?

Trump continues to give the FBI reasons to investigate

It would be one thing if this was an isolated incident – one off-color comment or puzzling policy action taken by the president. But this is a pattern of behavior that we’ve seen time and again, from the time Trump was a candidate throughout his presidency.

Trump has repeatedly cast doubt on Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election – even over our own intelligence community. He shamelessly bowed to Vladimir Putin on the world stage in Helsinki. He continues to strain America’s relationship with NATO allies and take foreign policy cues from Moscow.

And, as we learned in the past couple days, he went to “extraordinary lengths to conceal details of his conversations with Russian President Vladi­mir Putin.”

The FBI has every reason in the world to continue its investigation into whether Trump is working on behalf of Russia. After all, he hasn’t stopped giving them evidence that that’s exactly what he’s doing.
