The $4.75 trillion budget released by the White House on Monday may be dead on arrival when it comes to congressional approval, but it will have substantial and dire political consequences for Donald Trump.

As PoliticusUSA reported earlier via Reuters, the president’s new budget slashes $1.9 trillion in spending – many of those cuts coming from popular programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security – while boosting funding for the military and his unpopular vanity wall on the southern border.

In other words, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said after the plan was released, Trump’s budget is a “roadmap to a sicker, weaker America.”

Massive cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and more

Donald Trump is proposing massive cuts to three programs – Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security – that millions of Americans rely on. They aren’t just politically popular, but people literally rely on them to survive.

The plan guts $845 billion from Medicare, $1.5 trillion from Medicaid and $25 billion from Social Security.

As Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro pointed out on Monday, the proposal also takes a sledgehammer to “home energy assistance, teen pregnancy prevention, SNAP, afterschool programs, & much more.”

“It would be a cold day in hell before I helped pass a budget like this,” she said, echoing the thoughts of just about every congressional Democrat.

Trump’s budget is a gift to Democrats ahead of 2020

No matter who the Democratic nominee is in 2020, this budget will be a gift to them. The ads will write themselves.

After all, during the 2016 campaign – when the president didn’t have a record to run on – he promised that he wouldn’t cut any of the three major social safety net programs.

“I am the first & only GOP candidate to state there will be no cuts to Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid,” he said at the time.

By releasing this cruel budget on Monday, Donald Trump can no longer claim that he will protect these three programs, all while each Democratic candidate will put forward proposals to boost and expand the social safety net.

It will be the political gift that keeps on giving for Democrats as 2020 approaches.
