Democratic congressman and civil rights icon John Lewis said on Saturday that he believes Donald Trump is an illegitimate president, regardless of what Robert Mueller‘s final report concludes.

In an interview with MSNBC‘s Joy Reid, Lewis said, “I don’t think he’s legitimate. I said it at the end of the election, and I still believe that today.”

When asked if Trump should be impeached, the Georgia lawmaker said he believes “that day will come.”

John Lewis said:

Well, I think [impeachment] will come. I think that day will come. I don’t think he’s legitimate. I said it at end of the election, and I still believe that today. … He is not a legitimate president.

Has there been too much focus on the Mueller report?

There’s no question that the Mueller investigation is important when it comes to getting to the bottom of Russia‘s involvement in the 2016 election and whether the Trump campaign was in on it, as the evidence suggests.

But there are still many other active investigations that will continue long after we learn the contents of the Mueller report.

What John Lewis said echoes what some Democrats have been saying over the past two years, even when party leadership, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have been pinning hopes on the Mueller report.

Yes, the final special counsel report is still likely to be damning, regardless of the reporting that there will be no further indictments. But, as Rep. Lewis said on Saturday, we have known all along that Donald Trump is an illegitimate president of the United States.

With the special counsel investigation complete and the full report nearing its release, it is now up to Congress and the American people to figure out what happens next to hold Donald Trump accountable.
