Trump falsely blames Obama for child seperation policy

Trump said, “Obama separated the children, by the way. Just so you understand. President Obama separated the children. Those cages that were shown. I think they were very inappropriate. They were built by President Obama’s administration, not by Trump. President Obama had child separation. Take a look. The press knows it. You know it. We all know it. I’m the one that stopped it. President Obama had child separation. I’ll tell you something. Once you don’t have it, that’s why you see many more people coming. They’re coming like it’s a let’s go to Disney land. President Obama separated children. They had child separation. I changed it. Thank you very much.”

Obama had no child seperation policy

The AP fact-checked a similar Trump claim and concluded, “Obama did not have a separation policy. The Trump administration didn’t, explicitly, either, but that was the effect of zero tolerance, which meant that anyone caught crossing the border illegally was to be criminally prosecuted, even if they had few or no previous offences. The policy meant adults were taken to court for criminal proceedings and their children were separated. In most cases, if the charge took longer than 72 hours to process, which is the longest time that children can be held by Customs and Border Protection, children were sent into the care of the Health and Human Services Department. Zero tolerance remains in effect, but Trump signed an executive order June 20 that stopped separations.”

Trump also denied that there is a purge happening at the DHS or that he intends separate children from their parents because he believes that is a deterrent to migration. When all else fails, Trump goes back to the old Republican standby of blaming Obama. In this case, Trump is blaming Obama for a policy that was entirely his own creation, and that he is lusting to illegally return to.
