Trump Plans To Declare National Emergency To Impose Mexico Tariffs

According to a leaked document, Trump is going to try to get around congressional opposition to his Mexico tariffs with a new national emergency.

Trump is planning a new national emergency to impose Mexico tariffs

The Hill reported on a draft of national emergency declaration:

According to the document, the new emergency is necessary due to “the failure of the Government of Mexico to take effective action to reduce the mass migration of aliens illegally crossing into the United States through Mexico.”

The new emergency declaration would follow a February emergency declaration, which Trump used to justify sending National Guard troops to support Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the southern border.

Republicans in Congress set themselves up for this

By not standing up to Trump on the national emergency declaration for the wall, House and Senate Republicans set themselves up for this outcome. Republicans in Texas, where Trump is already trailing Joe Biden by 4 points will be pummeled by the public if they don’t stop Trump’s tariffs. Trump is about to further devastate farmers in Iowa and other Midwestern states.

Republicans have brought this problem on to themselves. One could argue that by not standing up to Trump during the 2016 Republican primary, the party dug their graves then, and it was only a matter of time until Trump took action like tariffs on Mexico that the GOP will be paying for at the ballot box in 2020.

Trump’s national emergency declaration for the imposition of tariffs is bogus, but by the time it weaves its way through the courts, the economic damage will be catastrophic.

Mexico doesn’t need to do anything. The American people will be the ones who will suffer under these new tariffs. Trump is about to take the US economy to a very dark place, and every American who pays Trump’s tariff tax should blame the Republican Party.
