Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters, the powerful chair of the House Financial Services Committee, said on Tuesday that regardless of the politics, she believes Donald Trump should be impeached because he is “unworthy” to be president.

Waters told MSNBC’s Ali Velshi that she will continue to build a case for impeachment through her committee investigations, regardless of what Senate Republicans plan to do.

“I don’t bother with the speculation about what the Senate will or will not do,” Waters said. “I just say that, number one, that this president is unworthy, that he has no respect for the Constitution of the United States of America.”

Rep. Waters said:

I don’t bother with the speculation about what the Senate will or will not do. We don’t know what unveils. We don’t know whether money laundering becomes very evident. We don’t know whether or not collusion based on even what Mueller has done or whatever other information that we discover will be the deciding factor among Republicans. So I don’t buy the speculation by the talking heads, by the media, by others who speculate about what happened with Bill Clinton as opposed to what could happen now with Trump. I just say that, number one, this president is unworthy, that he has no respect for the Constitution of the United States of America. I say that the Mueller report gives us a guideline that it’s indicated in that report, basically, that he has obstructed justice. I believe that he has also colluded with the Russian government. He does not criticize Putin. I think he has been involved with some of the oligarchs in the Kremlin, and I think there is a lot more information that Mr. Manafort has. I have looked at all of his allies long before we got in-depth in this discussion. … I believe that and I will continue to believe that and I will continue to do my work as the chair of that committee.

There is no Democratic civil war over impeachment

What Rep. Waters also made clear during her interview with MSNBC’s Ali Velshi is that there is no ongoing Democratic civil war over impeachment, particularly between her and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Instead, Waters said they just have a difference over strategy.

While Speaker Pelosi believes the House should take a more deliberate, cautious approach when it comes to impeaching Donald Trump, Rep. Waters said she has been in favor of impeachment since before it was even part of the discussion.

Regardless of the difference in tactics, the two leaders are both moving in the same direction – using their oversight authority to investigate the wrongdoing laid out in the Mueller report and other potentially criminal conduct on the part of the president.
