Counterterrorism expert Malcolm Nance warned on Saturday that election interference in 2020 to benefit Donald Trump could be much more widespread than the Russian attack in 2016.

In a discussion on MSNBC’s AM Joy, Nance said that in Trump’s disgraceful comments to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, he “confessed to soliciting a crime” by inviting more election interference in 2020 – not just from Russia but from other foreign political agencies and even private individuals.

“What’s happened now is he has opened the pandora’s box,” Nance said, adding that people and political organizations from all over the world “have now all been solicited to come to the Trump team and to bring any dirt that they can find, whether true or not, about Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, anybody else, and then give it to them and there will be no repercussions.”

Nance said:

What you saw Donald Trump do the other day … is he confessed to soliciting a crime. … This showed his mindset and why he didn’t talk to Robert Mueller. He would’ve arrogantly confessed that in his mind, these crimes are not crimes, therefore he can do them. What’s happened now is he has opened the pandora’s box. Not just foreign intelligence agencies; political organizations from around the world, private individuals have now all been solicited to come to the Trump team and to bring any dirt that they can find, whether true or not, about Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, anybody else, and then give it to them and there will be no repercussions and most likely there will be rewards if Trump wins another election. That’s exactly what he’s done there. He has solicited a crime.

Trump’s open invitation means more election meddling in 2020

By even hinting that he would be open to accepting help from international adversaries in 2020, Donald Trump has guaranteed that the next presidential election – in terms of foreign interference – will be a much bigger problem than what we saw in 2016.

Not only does the president’s open invitation continue to give the green light to Russia, which he has already been doing for two years, but it gives a wink and a nod to other foreign countries, entities and individuals that this president can be bought and sold – but only if you help keep him in the White House.

Republicans may have expressed half-hearted disapproval over the president soliciting a crime out in the open, but it will do nothing to stop the election meddling that Trump has now invited. It will only further weaken American democracy.
