Elizabeth Warren Blames Mitch McConnell Corruption For Endless Gun Massacres

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren railed against Congress for standing in the way of common-sense gun reforms that would save lives if Mitch McConnell and Republicans would stop blocking them.

“We have a Congress that is beholden to the gun industry,” Warren said. “And unless we’re willing to address that head-on and roll back the filibuster, we’re not going to get anything done on guns.”

Warren said:

But here’s the deal. The question we need to ask is when we’ve got this much support across the country, 90% of Americans want to see us do — I like registration – want to see us do background checks, want to get assault weapons off the streets, why doesn’t it happen? And the answer is corruption, pure and simple. We have a Congress that is beholden to the gun industry. And unless we’re willing to address that head-on and roll back the filibuster, we’re not going to get anything done on guns. I was in the United States Senate when 54 senators said, let’s do background checks, let’s get rid of assault weapons. And with 54 senators, it failed because of the filibuster. Until we attack the systemic problems, we can’t get gun reform in this country. We’ve got to go straight against the industry and we’ve got to change Congress. So, it doesn’t just work for the wealthy and well-connected, so it works for the people.

Mitch McConnell is standing in the way of gun reform

The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives has already passed common-sense gun reform legislation that would expand background checks and more – but it has yet to get a vote in the McConnell-controlled Senate.

If you’re wondering why such widely supported legislation is refused a vote in the Senate, just follow the money. As I wrote last month, the NRA has thrown $1.6 million at McConnell and Republicans in the first half of 2019 to block expanded background check legislation from getting to Donald Trump’s desk.

It is the corruption and refusal to put American lives over NRA money that makes gun massacres more likely – and Mitch McConnell is the face of that fatal inaction.
