Anti-Trump Group Trolling The President By Sending Him Books For Valentine’s Day

Donald Trump, by his own admission, doesn’t read books.

For those who have paid attention to the president for the past year and a half, this isn’t all that surprising. Trump has shown himself to be a bottomless pit of bluster and misinformation who repeatedly demonstrates how little he knows about the world. Worse, he shows no willingness to learn.

Thus, it’s no surprise that books, which exceed the president’s 140-character attention span, don’t have a place in the world of Trump.

One group is hoping to use the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday to change that.

As the Huffington Post reported on Monday, a Facebook event titled “Bury the White House in Books on Valentine’s Day!” is encouraging those opposed to the new president to send him books – “his least favorite form of entertainment,” HuffPo noted.

Leaders are Readers, the organization that launched the effort, asks participants to follow three simple steps:

Step 1: Buy a book you think President Trump should read at your local indie bookstore or favorite book purveyor.

Step 2: Inside the book, write a note to the administration either explaining why you chose the book, and/or promoting an issue you care about. Anything of your choice.

Step 3: This February 14th, Valentine’s Day, put your book in the mail to:
President Donald Trump
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW
Washington, DC 20500

Aaron Hamburger and Stacie Whitaker, who are leading this effort, “share a belief in the importance of reading,” the Huffington Post noted.

In an email to the PoliticusUSA, Hamburger said, “All our recent presidents, Republican and Democratic, have been readers. Part of being a leader is knowing what it means to sit in the audience, how to listen, and there’s nothing more humbling and informing than reading, taking in the voice and consciousness of someone else in such a deep way.”

“Without reading, you miss such a big part of the world,” he added.

Unfortunately, it’s doubtful the initiative will convince the president to turn off cable news and pick up a book from time to time. In no instance throughout his political career has he shown a willingness to put himself in the shoes of somebody else.

As the Washington Post reported last year, in the rare instances when Trump does actually read, it’s typically news articles about himself or magazines that have his face plastered on the front of them.

In other words, if it involves anybody other than him, he’s not interested.

Still, Hamburger said that he already considers the initiative to be a great success because it has given so many people a way to express their opposition to Trump in a unique way.

“There have been lots of rallies and marches, but not everyone lives somewhere where they can get to that kind of thing. This is one way for those people to get their voice out there,” he said. “It will take a multitude of voices and approaches combined.”

Though the new U.S. president is unlikely to start picking up books anytime soon, it’s clear that his opposition is strong and already finding new ways to resist his agenda.

In the end, that should make all of us hopeful.
