Since Donald Trump launched his campaign for the presidency in 2015, it’s been apparent that foreign policy wasn’t his strongest suit. He even took pride in not showing any interest in learning.
As president, not only is he still ignorant about the world he leads, but it now appears he’s turning foreign policy into a form of entertainment for his rich friends.
According to a new report from Variety, Trump turned the Syrian air strikes last month into an after-dinner show at his Mar-a-Lago club.
The admission came from Wilbur Ross, the president’s commerce secretary.
More from the report:
Speaking at the Milken Institute Global Conference on Monday, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross recalled the scene at Mar-a-Lago on April 6, when the summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping was interrupted by the strike on Syria.
“Just as dessert was being served, the president explained to Mr. Xi he had something he wanted to tell him, which was the launching of 59 missiles into Syria,” Ross said. “It was in lieu of after-dinner entertainment.”
As the crowd laughed, Ross added: “The thing was, it didn’t cost the president anything to have that entertainment.”
While it may be fun for Trump’s wealthy, country club friends to observe real-time foreign policy decisions like they’re watching a reality show, it’s incredibly troubling. There was nothing funny or entertaining about dropping missiles on Syria after Bashar al-Assad
There was nothing funny or entertaining about dropping missiles on Syria after Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons on the people of his country, killing over 80 innocent civilians, including children.
So, no, this is not a network TV show in which Trump fires some b-list celebrity, nor is it a real-life version of the Hunger Games.
This is American foreign policy and real lives are at stake – even if those lives aren’t important to the rich folks who walk the halls of Mar-a-Lago.
