San Juan Mayor Laughs At Trump’s Twitter Attacks And Says She Is Too Busy Saving Lives To Care

Responding to Donald Trump’s unhinged and racist Twitter tantrum on Saturday morning in which the president attacked both the San Juan mayor and the Puerto Rican people, Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz laughed and said she’s too busy saving lives to care about Trump’s hateful ramblings.

In an interview on MSNBC’s AM Joy, Cruz said, “I have no time for distractions.”

When asked by Reid whether any Democrats told her to call out Donald Trump, as the president claimed this morning, the San Juan mayor laughed and said:

Actually, I was asking for help. I wasn’t saying anything nasty about the president. But don’t take my word for it. General Buchanan, three star general, has said as one of the first comments that he’s made about the Puerto Rico situation, that he desn’t have enough troops and he doesn’t have enough equipment of what he needs to get the situation under control. … This is a three star general telling the world that right now he does not have the appropriate means and tools to take care of the situation. … This is a time when everyone shows their true colors. I have no time for distractions. … I will continue to do whatever I have to do, say whatever I have to say, compliment the people that I need to compliment, and call out the people that I need to call out. This isn’t about me. This isn’t about anyone. This is about lives that are being lost if things do not get done properly real quickly.

By brushing off Trump’s attacks, the San Juan mayor is showing actual leadership. Unlike the president, she has put her ego aside and is working to save as many lives as she can with the limited resources the federal government has provided.

Trump, meanwhile, is busy waging distracting and unhinged Twitter attacks on the people of Puerto Rico, who need the full-throated support of the federal government. When he does talk about what’s going on on the devastated island, he seems to only care about the financial impact – not the human toll – of the storm.

Instead of attacking the San Juan mayor as she works tirelessly to save lives in Puerto Rico, Donald Trump should be taking notes from her about how to lead in a crisis.
