Giuliani’s Unhinged Interview Reveals Trump’s Pathetic Legal Defense

Rudy Giuliani had quite the unhinged interview with Dana Bash several days ago.

As PoliticusUSA Editor-In-Chief, and my colleauge Jason Easley described that interview in his piece titled Rudy Giuliani Screws Up And Admits Mueller Wants To Interview Trump On Obstruction of Justice:

“Thanks to the Rudy Giuliani, the world’s worst defense lawyer, it is now publicly known that Mueller wants to talk to Trump about obstruction of justice.”

Easley is correct: Rudy Giuliani is showing the nation that he is “the world’s worst defense lawyer,” and it appears he is still peddling his lies about a Spy supposedly infiltrating the Trump campaign, despite not one thing being stated by either political party after reviewing classified documents which were supposed to prove the President’s lie to be true.

As Republican Commentator, Rick Wilson told a panel on Sunday:

“I think the big lie of the week that was exposed was if they had found anything in this Justice Department briefing, Devin Nunes would have run out of there like a monkey with his ass on fire to say there was a spy that they caught and knew who it was,” Wilson told an MSNBC panel Sunday.”

But nothing of the sort happened. Nunes (R-CA) as well as other Republicans remained hushed after viewing the documents while House Intelligence Committee ranking member Adam Schiff (D-CA) made clear that the documents revealed nothing new. According to Schiff:

“Nothing we heard today has changed our view that there is no evidence to support any allegation that the FBI or any intelligence agency placed a spy in the Trump campaign or otherwise failed to follow appropriate procedures and protocols,” Schiff said on Thursday.”

And, if you thought Giuliani’s interview with Bash could not get any worse, you would be wrong.

Giuliani decided to call both Former Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, and former CIA Director, John Brennan “clowns.”

Bash attempting to remind the Former Mayor of New York how he “had worked closely with intelligence agents” throughout his “decades in public life,” asked Giuliani if he really believed “that people like Clapper and Brennan are part of a deep state conspiracy, only to receive the following response from Trump’s television lawyer:

“I don’t know what you want to call it,” Giuliani replied. “But I have no regard at all for Clapper and Brennan. I think they’re two clowns. Clapper is talking about spying, which he doesn’t realize it’s spying on the Trump campaign. He’s [had] an obligation to tell them.”

Apart from calling two distinguished intelligence officers and public servants “clowns,” Giuliani is not being accurate about Clapper’s commentary regarding what led to the launching of investigation into the Trump campaign.

Lest the reader forget: It was George Papadopoulos’ bragging to an Australian diplomat over in the United Kingdom which placed the Trump campaign under the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s radar.

Furthermore, the day after James Clapper made his now infamous comments about the Russian investigation and a “spy,” Trump immediately took to Twitter falsely claiming Clapper “inadvertently admitted,” that a spy was used to infiltrate his campaign.

However, Trump – as he, his supporters, and his base are wont to do – misquoted Clapper, despite Clapper making clear “the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not spy” on Trump’s campaign.

According to Fact Check.org” , this is what Clapper said word for word:

“Clapper said that Trump should have been happy to know that the FBI was investigating “what the Russians were doing” to infiltrate his campaign and influence a U.S. presidential election.”

Whether Trump is directing Giuliani to repeat this same lie in public, or whether Giuliani is providing this tack for a legal strategy for Trump is unclear.

What is clear is that the allegation is a blatant lie and each and every American had better prepare themselves for the apparent muddying of the waters that is sure to come should Mr. Mueller, the Special Counsel tasked with investigating this serious breach of our democracy, find Mr. Trump or his campaign guilty of conspiring with the Russians or obstructing justice.

Not satisfied with smearing two civil servants’ names, Giuliani then decided to take things to entirely new low by stating the following:

“Brennan was chief torturer in charge,” he added. “Then he disowned it, then I don’t know what he did for the CIA. He’s the most political CIA director I have ever met.”

Giuliani continued, muttering under his breath: “Clapper, well, yeah. They’re not civil servants as far as I know.”

Bash responded with a simple, “Really? With, “all those decades of service in the military.”

This ought not surprise us however, especially given the fact that Trump disrespected Senator John McCain (R-AZ), for being a “captured POW,” pointing out how he “likes people who weren’t captured,” marginalizing the heroic act of McCain while serving in Vietnam.

But if Giuliani wants to call Brennan “the chief torturer in charge,” he had better go get himself checked out mentally, for it appears the television lawyer has forgotten his own past position on the issue of torture and waterboarding.

During the 2008 Republican Presidential debates, Giuliani endorsed the practice of waterboarding despite the act violating Article Three of The Geneva Convention.

Giuliani’s exact statement from that debate is as follows:

“I would say every method they could think of, and I would support them in doing that because I have seen — [applause] — I have seen what can happen when you make a mistake about this and I don’t want to see another 3,000 people dead in New York or any place else.”

Finally, Giuliani’s comments about Brennan and Clapper, reveal to this nation Trump’s legal strategy which can best be summed up as follows: engage in a smear campaign over the principals involved in the investigation, whether true or not, so as to ensure the public remains confused or doubts Mueller’s findings with the hopes of avoiding political or legal consequences.

But, if Bill Clinton received an Article of Impeachment for lying about having a sexual relationship with a female, I remain confident in America’s ability to see through this charade produced by Trump and Company.
