Republican Gov. John Kasich didn’t hold back on Thursday night, saying he is “sick” to his stomach over how far the country and the Republican Party have fallen under Donald Trump.
In an interview with MSNBC‘s Chris Matthews, the outgoing Ohio governor said that the president has caused the Republican Party to shrink, which led to the blue wave earlier this month.
“This makes me sick to my stomach, all of these things that are happening,” Kasich said.

Kasich said:
There are people who are watching this who think, ‘Oh, well, you know, Kasich‘s happy. Maybe he’ll run for president.’ Chris, this makes me sick to my stomach. All of these things that are happening. Because I believe, like you, we love our country, we worry about our country, we worry about, you know, what kind of message this sends to the world. And, but, you know, we’re in tribal politics. We see it all the time. And I know, you know, the question is, why does he have 90 percent Republican support? Look at the party. It’s shrinking. You know, it’s dramatically lost membership, and it isn’t with any joy that I say, those House elections, I think the Republicans lost 39 seats. There was a blue wave. Something that I thought would happen.
The 2018 midterm elections were a disaster for Trump with the Democrats winning the U.S. House of Representatives in a 40-seat pickup – but 2020 is shaping up to be just as bad.
Not only is Trump imploding before our eyes as Robert Mueller‘s investigation tightens around him, but his growing weakness is opening the door to a Republican primary challenger in two years – something that would likely doom his re-election bid.
If formidable Republican leaders like John Kasich – popular in the state of Ohio – step up in 2020 in an effort to save their party from Trump, it would likely peel at least some GOP voters away from the president and guarantee a Democrat is elected.
Of course, all of that assumes Trump will still be in a position to seek re-election two years from now, which looks less likely with each passing day as Robert Mueller‘s investigation pushes toward its conclusion.
