While Robert Mueller’s investigation has now officially come to a close and some Republicans are celebrating the news that there will be no more indictments, the majority of investigations into possible Trump crimes weren’t even connected to the special counsel probe.

During a discussion on MSNBC on Saturday, Axios reporter Alexi McCammond pointed out that there are “at least 10” ongoing investigations there weren’t connected to Mueller’s investigation.

“Even without Mueller there, we’re going to have the legacy of this broader investigation that Mueller was really the public face of, continuing and being a thorn in Trump’s side,” she said.

Garrett Graff from Wired … he laid out in this incredible article something like the 17 investigations into the Trump campaign and Russia. Only seven of those, I believe, were under Mueller’s purview. So that leaves at least ten in which other agencies, and institutions and folks are going to be looking into those things. Even without Mueller there, we’re going to have the legacy of this broader investigation that Mueller was really the public face of, continuing and being a thorn in Trump’s side.

Republicans are taking a premature victory lap

Of course, none of this kept Republicans from taking a victory lap following the one thing we did learn on Friday: that there will be no further indictments from Mueller.

But as The Guardian pointed out, “It is possible that Mueller, a former FBI director, is not bringing charges against some individuals because he has referred their cases to other prosecutors. It is also still possible his report will be damning, establishing collusion or obstruction of justice in the court of public opinion if not a court of law, fuelling demands for Trump’s impeachment and mortally wounding his chances of re-election.”

Ultimately, the Republican victory lap is premature and a bit puzzling, not only because the Mueller report is still likely to be damning but also because there are still multiple investigations that could endanger the president worse than Mueller ever could have.
