CNN Analyst Walsh Says Biden Shouldn’t Run in 2020

CNN’s Joan Walsh has advised likely 2020 Democratic president candidate Joe Biden not to run, according to a report this morning in The Hill.

According to Walsh, it would be better if Biden would support a woman candidate. She said that Biden has been saying that he wants to change what the former vice president called “a white man’s culture.” And the best way to do that would be to elect a woman as president.

Walsh’s comments came during a discussion with CNN host Erin Burnett, who said:

“You’ve got Joe Biden as the white grandfather in all of this, the white man saying it’s a white man’s culture. Okay. It’s got to change.

Then Walsh, a longtime Democratic activist and feminist, responded by asserting:

“I have an idea for how he can change it. Don’t run.”

“Come out and support a woman. There’s six women in the race, four female senators. If you want to change it, that’s a way to change it.”

“Y’know, I admire Joe Biden,” Walsh added. “I am a fond Democrat. He was a great vice president. But if you want to change it, don’t run.”

At the Biden Courage Awards in New York on Tuesday, Biden said he regretted his actions as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee at Anita Hill’s Senate hearing in Oct. 1991. During those hearings, which dealt with her sexual harassment accusations of then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, Biden was accused of being sexist and insensitive.

So, in attempting to deal with the criticism he has been receiving, Biden defended himself by saying:

“A brave lawyer, a really notable woman, Anita Hill, a professor, showed the courage of a lifetime talking about her experience being harassed by Clarence Thomas.”

“But she paid a terrible price. She was abused in the hearing. She was taken advantage of. Her reputation was attacked. I wish I could have done something.”

“It’s an English jurisprudential culture, a white man’s culture,” Biden said. “It’s got to change.”

Biden has been in first place in most polls of likely Democratic primary voters, but he has not yet formally announced his candidacy. He was encouraged to run by foreign leaders at an international conference earlier this year.

He also has been considering a very unusual move: naming his vice-presidential running mate at the same time he announces his candidacy. The rumor has been that he would name Georgia politician Stacey Abrams to run with him if he wins the 2020 nomination.
