Democratic leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, hit Mitch McConnell with a double whammy on Monday by inviting the U.S. women’s national soccer team to the Senate and urging the majority leader to pass equal pay legislation to honor their World Cup victory.
In a speech on the Senate floor, Schumer congratulated the U.S. women’s soccer team and told his GOP counterpart to take up equal pay legislation that has already been approved by the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives.
“What the U.S. women did was extraordinary, and they deserve to be compensated fairly. All women need to be compensated fairly, period,” the Democratic leader said. “How about the equal pay amendment that the House has passed? Why don’t we put it on the floor of the Senate in honor of the women who won the World Cup? Why don’t we do that, Leader McConnell?”

The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team was able to capture a fourth World Cup victory on Sunday, and Democrats are hoping to use the occasion to score a goal for all American women.
Earlier this year, Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives passed a piece of legislation that seeks to “close the wage gap between men and women.” It’s a no-brainer measure that Senate Republicans have yet to pass.
The U.S. women’s soccer team’s victory over the weekend has put renewed focus on the issue of equal pay, and Democrats are looking to paint Republicans into a corner on an issue that most Americans support.
