Steve Schmidt Says Gays Won Even as Pro-Trump ‘Daily Stormer’ Targets Gays for Death

According to Republican strategist Steve Schmidt, Trump has ended the culture wars and guess what? Gays won. As Media Matters observed, “Schmidt ignored Trump’s extreme anti-LGBTQ Vice President-elect Mike Pence and Chief Strategist Steve Bannon’s stated positions on the issue as well as the countless other struggles LGBTQ people in the United States face beyond gay marriage such as harassment, depression, and suicide.”

Watch Schmidt invent an imaginary reality for LGBT Americans:

STEVE SCHMIDT: So you see all these Republican politicians asked awkwardly yesterday about Donald Trump saying on 60 Minutes, the gay marriage fight is over. Donald Trump blew the whistle on Sunday night on the culture wars. Basically said it’s over. It’s done. So if you’re a gay American this morning, it’s over. You won. You have a Republican in the White House, and there’s no more fighting about this issue.

JOE SCARBOROUGH (HOST): But if are a Republican that this is a key issue for you, and you’ve campaigned on it 10 times to keep getting re-elected, suddenly you’re looking at Donald Trump saying, he’s running my party?

SCHMIDT: Yeah, not anymore. Every one of those people from Mike Pence on down, their silence was acquiescence to that position. It’s over.

Sadly, there is no silence, except in the empty halls of Schmidt’s head. As Newsweek reports, “The Daily Stormer, a Neo-Nazi website, published a list of dozens of Twitter users who expressed sadness over the election outcome on Wednesday, urging its readers to target and harass them to the point of suicide.”

The targets include, needless to say, gays as well as other minorities.

Speaking of Mike Pence, says Newsweek‘s Lucy Westcott,

“The frontpage of the white supremacist website shows a large photo of President-elect Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, meeting with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Vice President-elect Mike Pence. ‘You should probably go ahead and be afraid now,’ writes Andrew Anglin, the website’s publisher. The post suggests it’s readers ‘can troll these people and definitely get some of them to kill themselves.’”

Steve Schmidt shows an occasional flicker of intelligence during his appearances on MSNBC but these latest comments betray the deplorable tendency of the mainstream media, having gotten Trump into the White House, to normalize his “movement” harmless.

However, as the SPLC, ADL and others have shown, and as we have described here, the rise in hate crimes demonstrates the exactly opposite to be true. Gays have no more won than Jews or Muslims or women have won. What won is hate. And pretending hate is something else makes media figures like Steve Schmidt part of the problem.

Instead of a win, instead of “make America great again,” what America’s minorities, including gays, get is “Seig Heil 2016.”
