Memo To Trump: Here’s What It Looks Like For A President To ‘Win’ On Health Care

Last updated on July 18th, 2023 at 11:23 am

Donald Trump spent over a year telling his supporters that, under his leadership, the country would start winning so much that we may even get sick of winning.

“We will have so much winning if I get elected that you may get bored with the winning,” he said during the campaign.

Despite the words of this unhinged conman, the first two months of his presidency have been defined by losing, whether it’s his Muslim ban that failed twice, a botched and deadly military operation in Yemen, his inability to get Mexico to pay for his wall, a deluge of lies, an explosive Russia scandal, and most recently, a disastrous and epic failure to bring his own party together to fulfill a seven-year promise of repealing the Affordable Care Act.

I’m sure I missed some, but you get the drift.

After the last Trump fail, the president – and the American people – may forget what it looks like for the country to have a president “win” when it comes to passing a health care plan that has so far helped millions of people.

Here’s what that looks:

The video, of course, shows President Obama and Vice President Biden celebrating the signing of the Affordable Care Act in 2010.

Obama’s ability to accomplish such a “complicated” task and do something that a century’s worth of presidents was unable to do didn’t come by accident either. It was a success because the guiding principle behind it wasn’t to destroy something as part of some political crusade – it was to reform the health care system to help more people. It was that simple.

When the people are your priority, it’s much easier to get things done.

For Trump and Republicans, the driving force behind their failed health care experiment was simply to repeal a law because it had Obama’s name attached to it. It wasn’t about helping people – it was about hurting a former president’s legacy.

After a winless two months in the White House, perhaps Trump should give Barack Obama a call. He knows a thing or two about winning.
