I am not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but former Bush attorney general Alberto Gonzales was on CNN’s The Situation Room, where he said that that there is no doubt that Sonia Sotomayor is qualified for the Supreme Court. I don’t know if being endorsed by Gonzales helps or hurts her cause, but he did speak well of her qualifications.

Gonzales said, “I have no questions in my mind about her qualifications in terms of education, experience. A president is not required to nominate the most qualified person to the court. I think he is obliged to nominate someone who is well qualified, and I think by any measure, she is well qualified. I think there are legitimate questions about her judicial philosophy, and again, that is something that will be examined in the confirmation process.”
This wasn’t very harsh criticism from Alberto Gonzales. He is in disagreement with some on the right who are disputing Sotomayor’s qualifications. Interestingly, with the exceptions of right wing talk radio, and Pat Robertson, there has been very little criticism of Sotomayor. It would be a disservice to the confirmation process, if her judicial philosophy wasn’t questioned.
I am not sure any potential Supreme Court nominee should be happy that Alberto Gonzales is endorsing their credentials. Gonzales may go down in history as the most inept attorney general ever. Plus, he was involved in the decision to nominate Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court. If you read the tea leaves today, I don’t see much Republican opposition to Sotomayor.
