Obama Sets A Trap By Flat Out Telling Boehner and The Republicans, “Sue me.”

President Obama is setting a trap for John Boehner and the House Republicans, as during his remarks on the economy, the president had a simple message for Boehner, “sue me.”

The president said:

And this obstruction keeps the system rigged for those who are doing fine at the top.  It prevents us from helping more middle-class families.  And as long as they insist on taking no action whatsoever that will help anybody, I’m going to keep on taking actions on my own that can help the middle class — like the actions I’ve already taken to speed up construction projects, and attract new manufacturing jobs, and lift workers’ wages, and help students pay off their loans.

And they criticize me for this.  Boehner sued me for this.  And I told him, I’d rather do things with you, pass some laws, make sure the Highway Trust Fund is funded so we don’t lay off hundreds of thousands of workers.  It’s not that hard.  Middle-class families can’t wait for Republicans in Congress to do stuff.  So sue me.   As long as they’re doing nothing, I’m not going to apologize for trying to do something.

And look, I just want to be clear — Republicans in Congress, they’re patriots, they love their country, they love their families.  They just have a flawed theory of the economy that they can’t seem to get past.  They believe that all we should be doing is giving more tax breaks to those at the top, eliminating regulations that stop big banks or polluters from doing what they want, cut the safety net for people trying to work their way into the middle class, and then somehow the economy is going to get stronger and jobs and prosperity trickle down to everybody.  That’s their worldview.  I’m sure they sincerely believe it.  It’s just not accurate.  It does not work.

I am starting to suspect that even John Boehner can smell the trap that is being set. Earlier in the day, it looked like the president was intentionally trying to bait the Speaker of the House into suing him by announcing that he was directing his cabinet to find more areas where he could act unilaterally.

President Obama would love nothing more than for Boehner to follow through on his threat and file the lawsuit against him. The lawsuit has given Obama the opportunity to discuss Republican obstruction. His administrative actions are making Democrats look like they are the only party that is remotely interested in doing anything for the American people, while candidates across the country can hammer Republican incumbents for their symphony of obstruction.

Obama’s challenge to Boehner isn’t an empty one. This president knows exactly what he is doing, and he is gambling that House Republicans can’t resist getting into another confrontation. What President Obama and most people outside of the Republican Party already realize is that Boehner won’t win. Centuries of legal precedent are on President Obama’s side. Republicans don’t even know why they are suing the president. Boehner’s lawsuit is a hopeless shot in the dark strategy that the Speaker is counting on to get Republicans to the polls in November.

By trying to sue Obama, Boehner has energized the president, the Democratic Party, and the many voters who were thinking about staying home this November. Of course, if previous behavioral patterns hold true, since Obama is in favor of the lawsuit, Republicans will now be against it.

  1. Watching the hateful, lying, mean spirited repubs yap on and on, but do nothing is beyond words. I feel insulted and disgusted by them. They will destroy us if we don’t dilute their power in 2014. The next 2 years will be all about impeachment of PBO otherwise.

  2. Shows how greed, ignorance and complacency works against those who have it. These 300+ Conservative Congressmen criminals have hustled followers through the lies they passed in lust for $$$ from their big business bosses they work illegally in Congress for..AGAINST THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA. The 1% ers aka Big Business finance them in return for tax benefits the rest of America pays for(Greed). Big Business now also has 5 conservative USSC justices on the bankroll now basically changing Constitutional laws in favor of corporations (Greed/Complacency). Working against the people of America. Violating oaths, among other crimes against the people of America they committed on and off Capitol Hill are grounds for treason (which gets them out NOW thanks to complacency and digital technology) and plenty of charges after that. One click by Obama and that’s it. GOP and 1% ers started saving & leaving the facts for him over 30 years ago and stored all of them away with NSA by 08. GOP had it…

  3. No Mr President, they are traitors. They are only patriots to the koch and the 1%. The word patriot used in a sentence with the gop is a foreign language

  4. “Centuries of legal precedent are on President Obama’s side.”

Until or if it reaches the Supreme(ly)fucked up Court!

  5. Obama keeps insisting that House Republicans continue to “do nothing”.

On the contrary, Boehner and company have done lots of stuff:
    – attacked women’s rights
    – attacked gay rights
    – attacked immigrants
    – attacked the poor
    – attacked public sector wage earners
    – undermined the economic recovery by interfering with our nation’s ability to pay its debts
    – attempted to repeal the ACA … over … and over … and over again.

  6. It won’t. This is just Boehner’s weekly red meat toss to the Fox watchers. They thought the birth certificate was it. They thought they could ‘repeal’ the ACA. They thought they had Hillary with Benghazi. They thought they could whip up a frenzy with the wiretapping that they were all for until President Obama did some of it. They thought they and him with Benghazi until he actually captured the mastermind (notice how the Benghazi hearings have now fizzled to nothing?) The GOP has done nothing for 5 years, and I’m so glad our President is pointing out their determination to screw the people while collecting their nice salaries. They have made lying and hate into a job. Enjoy it now, pubs…November is coming, and women are very very angry.

  7. So, what’s taking Boner so long? He’s been threatening a lawsuit for, well, who knows how long? If it was going to happen, it would have happened by now, right?

  8. I agree with ALMOST everything our President said, except I think he is being too polite to the America hating republican/teabag/libertarian party who are actively working to destroy the progress Americans have worked for since the 1880’s.

The righties do NOT ‘love their country’…they want to destroy it.

  9. If Boehner had a valid case that would make in court, then he would have a valid case to put through for impeachment.

So much weighs on such a little word : “if”.

Problem for the GOP is that they have no valid case that would stand in court either civil or impeachment.

Hatred clouds the judgement of otherwise honorable men.

  10. Indeed. They are traitors. There would be huge public support for a justice dept investigaion of house republicans for criminal negligence.

  11. Boehner is OZ… the Great and Powerful!

“Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!”

“Some people without brains do an awful lot of talking.”

  12. the president is calling the repubs bluff or using reverse psychology on them. the repubs are doing this for votes in November that’s all and I hope it backfires on them just like everything else. heeeeheeeee.

  13. A political ploy for the mid-terms, that’s all this is. If Boehner really wanted to sue the President, he would have done it by now.

He’s throwing chum to the base – and he has to do that because they have nothing to run on for November. All they can do is tell their constituents, “Look, I went after Obama.” There is nothing else.

If their base would wise up and realize what is happening here, they’d pitch a fit. They are being hurt by this obstruction; nothing is getting done, their lives are not improving except in the incremental ways the President can do things through executive action.

They ought to be just as ticked off as the rest of us.

  14. It’s all seems kinda dismal now, especially with the Supremes gone over to the dark side, but looking down the road a ways, 1) they Republican base is shrinking and their chances of putting one of their own in the White House are approaching zero likelihood, probably for several election cycles, which means that 2) a near future Democrat POTUS will be nominating replacement judges for the SCOTUS, as several are likely to retire due to aging, and 3) the population is becoming more liberal daily, meaning an eventual Democrat majority in both houses of Congress, whereupon they can begin “getting’ ‘er done” and reversing as much of the harm these political remoras have done to the country in the past 12 years. GOTV. Let’s hope that we live to see it.

  15. The TeaOP politicians and their masters, the the majority of the 1% aren’t American patriots, they have no allegience except to the dollar and how much they can extract from the middle class and poor. The common folk TeaOp are a mix of people that while for the most part are patriotic, they’ve been fooled into being afraid of the changing of the US from a majority white christian to a multi-cultural nation. Some see themselves losing the ability to have jobs that pay well and that have a pension at the end. So instead of blaming it on the companies that are paying huge salaries to the executives and doing all they can to avoid paying to support the society that makes their profit possible, the strategists are using misdirection to make those who have a first instinct to distrust those different from themselves to blame everything on those darn “illegals and poor that are sucking off the public teat”. All the money spent on welfare pales in comparison to unpaid corporate taxes.

  16. Obama IS saying Enough is Enough! with you spiteful, backstabbing do nothings! All they do is whine and stomp their feet and complain, complain and throw tantrums at every thing or move the President makes. Looking like a bunch of two-faced, mean spirited legislators. Not worthy of their tax payer’s paychecks.

I appreciate you’re efforts, hardships for the sake of many people you’re trying to do your best helping, supporting, protecting us in many….

  18. So this is the reason for this farce?

Since Republicans took control of the U.S. House in January 2011, Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has led a cost-cutting effort that has trimmed staff for House committees by nearly 20%, saving taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. But the number of committee staff responsible for press and communications work has increased by nearly 15% over the same period, according to House spending records.

So instead of policy we get P.R. No wonder the idiots think what they say makes sense. And you idiots know who you are

  19. “…So sue me. As long as they’re doing nothing, I’m not going to apologize for trying to do something…”

    LOVE IT!
