Obama: McCain Promises a Dangerous Path

Today in Charlotte, NC Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama expanded his attack on John McCain and the economy to include McCain’s support for deregulating the health insurance industry. He said that McCain wants to continue on the same disastrous path that created the economic crisis.
He painted McCain as dangerous because of his lack of knowledge about the economy, “We’re now seeing the disastrous consequences of this philosophy all around us – on Wall Street as well as Main Street. And yet Senator McCain, who candidly admitted not long ago that he doesn’t know as much about economics as he should, wants to keep going down the same, disastrous path.”
The Democrat then connected McCain, deregulation, and healthcare, “He calls himself “fundamentally a deregulator,” when reckless deregulation and lack of oversight is a big part of the problem. And here’s the really scary part. Now this “Great Deregulator” wants to turn his attention to health care. He wrote in the current issue of a magazine – the current issue – that we need to open up health care to – quote – “more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking.” That’s right, John McCain says he wants to do for health care what Washington has done for banking.
“Over the years, states have come up with common sense rules to make sure that insurance companies aren’t just looking out for their own profits, but for your health. And we cannot toss those rules out the window. As anyone who has health care knows, the one thing we don’t need to do is give insurance companies an even freer hand over what they charge, who they cover, and what they’ll cover,” Obama said.
He stressed that deregulation can’t be allowed to spread to healthcare, “The radical idea that government has no role to play in protecting ordinary Americans has wreaked havoc on our economy. And we cannot let this dangerous philosophy spread to health care. What we’ve seen over the last few days is nothing less than the final verdict on this failed philosophy.”
Obama seems to have hit his stride on the issue of the economy. The campaign has found a message that they can use against McCain with voters every single day. The complete bungling of the issue of the federal bailout is something that the McCain campaign is still reeling from, and we have reached the point in the campaign where voters are paying attention and the time for gimmicks and distractions is over. McCain can’t hide anymore. He has to talk about the issues that matter, and so far, he is off to a very poor start.

Health and the Govt.
We do not need to turn our health care over to the Government, then they will be making all of your decisions, and we will be headed to a communist country with the Govt. running everything even your health, and exactly what type of health care would you have. What decisions will they make for you, I prefer FREEDOM OF CHOICE. Not Govt. choice.
health and gov.
depends on who wins. what makes you think the govvernment cares about which doctor you go see or tests you need, or meds you take. don't you understand that after this crap financial thing is done that the government wants to subsidise not take over. there are way too many things to control in the whole system.
Healthcare
Unfortunately you don`t know what you are talking about. The current healthcare in the US is only good for the ones who can afford it and too many people can`t! Not a very pretty picture for a country that wants to play in the front lines! I have lived in the US and Europe and I can promise you that in some parts of Europe you have a much superior healthcare system, yes Government regulated and for everyone by the way in very democratic countries! You can still pick whoever you want to see as a doctor and can also be a private patient if you wish. There is absolutely nothing communistic about this system! I am sure you are one of those who has not travelled very far in the world and just repeat certain party lines. Ignorant people like you get the US deeper and deeper in trouble heading into third world direction. Very sad!
Free market...
...and democracy are not the same thing. This should be pointed out over and over until the dittoheads finally get it. If you allow for healthcare (which should be a right, not a choice) to be taken over by the government it does not mean that we are on the fast track to Stalinism. It merelt means that we will make sure that everyone in our country is able to have proper health care. Thus, we will have a healthier society, which will be a more productive society. Why is this so hard to grasp?
Again with the hysterics . . .
To the poster above: You have swallowed the nonsense of doled out government health care as the definition of health insurance regulation. This is the pablum the right wing propoganda machine is cramming down throats--obviously to much success. Please read up on the vast array of alternatives to both our current health care, which isn't nearly as good as we're told it is, and getting governmental permission to get treatment.
Regulation doesn't and shouldn't equal ownership. THAT'S exactly the false dichotomy that led everyone to think financial regulation was oh-so-bad. Yeah, well hopefully now people can take off the blinders of fear-based catch phrases and see what's really going on. Try out some critical thinking skills for a change and realize that there aren't just two options--as the far right tries to posit every issue. There are endless options which can be considered IF open and rational debate can take place.
Ah, but open and rational debate seems to be dead anymore . . . better to throw out sensationalist phrases and lock the doors as the current administration has done for 8 years and as John McCain, the former straight talker, has now adopted as he's walled off Alaska and shields his VP candidate from the public . . .
We have no freedom anymore. We are fed snippets and, apparently, the vast majority are just fine with that.
Where did my America go??
taxing your healthcare benefits
John McCain's healthcare plan would be disasterous for the country. Very few people realize that under McCain's plan your health care benefits from work would be taxed. Read this article from FactCheck.org, a non-partisan organization.

Deregulation
As pointed out above deregulation does not mean government ownership. What deregulation would do is let the insurance companies be even more choosy about who they cover. Deregulation means all the decisions would come down to your HMO and you would have little recourse. No one is talking about govt. healthcare, and Obama's plan is NOT a single payer government run system. The purpose of his plan is cover the 46 million who have no insurance by providing an affordable alternative. There is no government taking over healthcare to it.
Look folks, to sum it up . .
Look folks, to sum it up . . . are Americans really naive or even stupid enough to continue an 8 year disaster for at least another 4 ??? If you love war, high gas prices, a shrinking economy, collapsing healthcare, rising unemployment, the rich getting richer . . . then by all means vote another elephant in.
Yes they are
Yes they are, so not be surprised the elephant will win
I'm neither party.
I'm neither party. Although, I plan on voting Democrat, and, not waste my vote on any other party. It comes down to "the better of the two evils". There comes a point when we need to try to slow down this downward spiral of the past eight years, and not letting it continue. Next term, maybe i'll be able to vote neither Democrat, nor, Republican, and, it won't end up as a "wasted" vote. God bless America.
