Obama Speaks About the Georgia-Russia Conflict

ImageDemocratic presidential candidate Barack Obama put out a statement condemning Russia for their escalation of the conflict with Georgia. “No matter how this conflict started, Russia has escalated it well beyond the dispute over South Ossetia and invaded another country. Russia has escalated its military campaign through strategic bombing and the movement of its ground forces into the heart of Georgia. There is no possible justification for these attacks,” Obama said.

He repeated his call for Russia to accept the proposed cease fire, “I reiterate my call for Russia to stop its bombing campaign, to stop flights of Russian aircraft in Georgian airspace, and to withdraw its ground forces from Georgia. The Georgian government has proposed a cease-fire and the Russian government should accept it. There is also an urgent need for humanitarian assistance to reach the people of Georgia, and casualties on both sides.”

Obama said that the U.N. must stand up for Georgia, “The United States, Europe and all other concerned countries must stand united in condemning this aggression, and seeking a peaceful resolution to this crisis. We should continue to push for a United Nations Security Council Resolution calling for an immediate end to the violence. This is a clear violation of the sovereignty and internationally recognized borders of Georgia – the UN must stand up for the sovereignty of its members, and peace in the world.”

The Illinois senator called for the U.S. and Europe to strengthen their relationship with Georgia, “Going forward, the United States and Europe must support the people of Georgia. Beyond immediate humanitarian assistance, we must provide economic assistance, and help rebuild what has been destroyed. I have consistently called for deepening relations between Georgia and transatlantic institutions, including a Membership Action Plan for NATO, and we must continue to press for that deeper relationship.”

He referred to this as a turning point in U.S. -Russian relations, “The relationship between Russia and the West is long and complicated. There have been many turning points, for good and ill. This is another turning point. Let me be clear: we seek a future of cooperative engagement with the Russian government, and friendship with the Russian people. We want Russia to play its rightful role as a great nation – but with that role comes the responsibility to act as a force for progress in this new century, not regression to the conflicts of the past.”

Obama’s language was similar in strength to that of President Bush who said that, Russia had “invaded a sovereign neighboring state.” He also said, “Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st century.” This is a critical moment for Russian-American relations, because Georgia has been a strong U.S. ally, and other than diplomacy, the Bush administration has few options in dealing with Russia.

There really isn’t a military option available, and if the United States stands by while Georgia falls, they risk losing other allies in the region. This is a situation that goes beyond electoral politics and requires Obama, Bush, and McCain to present a unified front, which is what they each are in the process of doing.

  1. It’s a disappointment in his inability to evaluate situation, especially most of blame in escalation of the situation is on the current administration. Why? Saakashvilli is this administration protege, as well as armed and trained his army, plus gave false promises on help. Obama is telling no matter how it started, it’s matter for me. Chasing Osama bin Laden is already caused several thousand killed including innocent ones, why the Russian cannot chase Saakashvilli, he killed innocent and peacekeepers, too? Therefore I don’t see a difference between him and McCain.

  5. “No matter how it started”, mr Obama? Just in case you didn’t know – it started with horrible, cynical, beast-like slaughter of some 2000 south-ossetian civilians by Georgian military forces. It started with heavy artillery bombing defenceless civil quarters of Tskhinvali, bombing by Mr Saakashvili’s men, by his personal order. Shooting wounded women, children, burning young girls, driving tanks over human bodies – “There is no possible justification for these attacks” – absolutely agree. But your somewhy forgot to mention, dear mr Obama, – attacks by Georgian military forces that Russian forces had to stop. Were obliged to. Had no alternative. “Russia has escalated it well beyond the dispute over South Ossetia” – well oh yea, who cares about bloodbath and ruined city, if it was perfomed by a “strong U.S. ally”, and who dares to challenge “our own SOB”?

Sure one shouldn’t mention Iraq, where it all started differently, it did matter how it started, mr Obama, for it started with a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge pile of money, oceans of oil USA needs so desperately. And… there was something about these shiiti villages and WoMD, or is it my memory that plays ricks on me?

“…deepening relations between Georgia and transatlantic institutions” – that’s what we really need. What if Georgian ruler happens to use Hitler’s methods? Well, erm, that’s not the point, says mr Obama. Have I got something wrong?

  6. Barack writes, ““No matter how this conflict started, Russia has escalated it well beyond the dispute over South Ossetia and invaded another country.” This did not start with the invasion of South Ossetia. Russian threats against Georgia and regional provocations and baiting have gone on for quite some time. Georgia reacted and clearly the Russians were ready with a well-planned response.

Furthermore, there is barely a mention of Chechnya anywhere to be found in all of this. Chechnya, whose chief city was utterly destroyed by relentless bombardment over many months, beginning with a rocket attack on the central marketplace that killed hundreds of civilians – (and that the Russians denied and, in fact, they denied any kind of military action while well advanced in the early stages of the demolition of the country!). Chechnya has been subject to two genocidal invasions since its legal separation from Russia in the early nineties. The Western governments turned away and the western media studiously ignored the whole affair, while Russia went ahead and eliminated a quarter of the population.

  7. First of all – there’s no fact of invasion. Whatever CNN says, even Georgian mass media denies any occupation apart from occupation of Ossetia and Abhasia, both of which have never agreed to be a part of Georgia.

Second of all: well ok, be so kind to explain what “well beyond the dispute over South Ossetia” means. 2000 lives butchered by Saakashivili’s forces during several night hours on August 8 – it’s not well beyond, is it? “Georgia reacted” – sure it was just a “reaction”, nothing more. The whole city has been destroyed but it is not something to worry about, it’s just something different, something that should be discussed apart from Georgia-Ossetia relationships, somewhere in distant future, if should be at all. And of course Russia should have kept watching in excitement while georgians were murdering ossetians folks as well as russian peace-makers – yeah, that all wasn’t beyond the dispute over South Ossetia, that was all right, that’s the way civilized society faces diplomatic difficulties. “Georgia reacted and clearly the Russians were ready with a well-planned response”. Clearly it was Russia who “well-planned” georgian “reaction” that suspiciously suits word “massacre”. Saakashvili killed and destroyed, but it is Russia that should take responsibility for all of this. It dared to interfere, which is unforgivable sin from USA point of view.

Leaving the question of “threats and provocations”, i’d like to notice that that Chechen war, howewer horrible it was, is over for many years now, but USA keeps inciting war in Iraq. I hope you know that out of all the Iraqi victims more than 97% (if not more) are innocent civilians, that KEEP DYING because of democratic, high-morale american presence in the country. Tortures, rapes, murders – USA soldiers do their duty well, no objections. So please don’t tell me about Chechnya as your american hands are even deeper in blood. Yugoslavia was bombed when mr Clinton decided to distract public opinion from the sex scandal he was involved in, mr Bush invaded Iraq when he desperately needed politic points after September 11 as well as Iraqis oil, both cases happened without any resolutions from UN – “we know better for sure”. Maybe USA should judge it’s own wars before condemning others. Maybe it should at least be a bit more objective at least towards its’ allies.

  8. Obama calls for a resolution from the UN Security Council. Russia has veto power in the UN Security Council. Obama shows his total lack of knowledge and judgment.

  13. Ooooooh, “horrible, cynical, beast-like slaughter of some 2000 south-ossetian civilians”.
Are still sure this and the rest are true?
Or you have probably realized that these are horrible, cynical, shameles lies, quite usual for Russia.

  14. I agree with the way Obama has responded. This article should mortal course to his responses.
