Republican Rep. Francis Rooney (R-FL) openly called for a purge of the FBI and DOJ as nervousness that the end is near for Trump is sweeping through the Republican Party.
Rooney said during an interview on MSNBC, “I would like to see the directors of the agencies purging. And say, look, we have a lot of great agents, a lot of great lawyers here, those are the people I want the American people to see and know the good work is being done, not the team in the deep state.”
MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson asked, “Language like that, congressman, purge, purge the Department Of Justice?
Rooney answered, “Well, I think that Mr. Strozik could be purged, sure.”
Rep. Rooney offered a meritless claim that the Russia investigation had gone “off the rails,” so a purge was needed to get the DOJ and FBI back on track, and by on track, Republicans mean not investigating Donald Trump.
The calls for Mueller to be fired and purges to occur are about stopping the Russia investigation. Some Republicans are willing to trash the credibility of the Department of Justice in order to keep Trump in office.
What you are seeing from people like Francis Rooney is desperation and fear. Many of these Republicans don’t know what possible crimes Trump might have committed. When they defend Trump, they are risking their own political lives, but the sense of terror is palpable. Donald Trump is going down, and some Republicans are risking everything to try and save him.
