Trump was interested in corruption, but according to Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), the president and Rudy Giuliani were trying to bring corruption back to Ukraine instead of getting rid of it.
Raskin said on MSNBC, “I think what we saw last week and what’s been coming out in the media suggests that there was indeed a very powerful shadow foreign policy being operated out of Ukraine by the president’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani and Mr. Parnas and Mr. Fruman, the gang that couldn’t shoot and they were basically working across purposes with official government policy, which was to oppose and root out corruption in Ukraine. And they were trying to bring corruption back to Ukraine, both in terms of their corrupt business dealings, but also in terms of applying coercive pressure on the Ukrainian government to produce dirt on the Bidens. And so I think that she would have a comprehensive overview of that whole situation.”

Rep. Raskin was making the point that the President Of The United States and his lawyer were working against stated US government policy and trying to corrupt a foreign government to help Trump win a second term in office.
Trump and his lawyer were working against the United States in Ukraine, and after the arrest of Giuliani’s associates, it is clear whose interests they were advancing along with Trump’s. The Ukrainians who Trump has been defending in this scandal are corrupt allies of Putin.
At the end of the day, the Ukraine scandal points to Trump abusing his power because, just like in 2016, he can’t win a US election without illegal outside help from a foreign government.
While it doesn’t fit the constitutional definition of treason, Trump has betrayed his oath of office and the country with his conduct.
