What President Obama didn’t say in his statement about the Boston Marathon bombing is just as important as what he said.

Obama said, “We don’t yet have all the answers but we know that multiple people have been wounded, some gravely.” The president has made every federal resource available to Boston, and praised the city’s police and first responders. The president promised that his administration will find out who did this, and said that whoever is behind this will be brought to justice. Obama repeated, “We will found out who did this, and we will hold them accountable.”

President Obama likely knows more than he is currently ready to publicly share. Local media in Boston has been reporting that the FBI didn’t notice any increased international chatter before the bombing, and there was no specific intelligence that this was being planned. WBZ in Boston reported that law enforcement is investigating the possibility that this was a homegrown actor.

The federal government isn’t officially saying much, but it appears that the fear that there might be more explosions is diminishing. NBC News is reporting that shrapnel may have been added to explosive devices. The bombs appear to be homemade IEDs. President Obama was correct. It is unlikely whoever carried out this attack will be able to escape justice. The fact that law enforcement doesn’t know who carried out this attack suggests that it may not have been carried out by a known terrorist or organization that the United States was monitoring.

The White House is confirming that Boston is being investigated as an act of terror. It is impossible to know with certainty at this time, but what happened at the Boston Marathon is starting give off the vibe of a domestic terrorist attack, or an attack carried out by someone with a clean criminal record. The Boston Marathon was attacked on Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts, which also happens to be federal tax day.

Coincidence? We’ll see.
