Parkland survivors reacted negatively to Trump’s remarks about the school as they view his statements as empty words that will be backed up with no action.

MSNBC’s Ali Velshi reported, “I was watching with survivors of what happened yesterday, a teacher and a student, and they had a lot of sort of negative responses to it. The president quoted scripture. The president really didn’t say the word gun in the entire thing. He said gunfire only in reference to reporting, reports of gunfire at the school. There was a sense it was empty promises. Lawmakers should be able to fix this problem but the kids don’t really understand why there isn’t a will and a desire to actually fix it. They felt that some of the comments not just from the president but from other lawmakers felt a little bit empty. There’s a local sheriff here who has been very strong. People seem to have a lot of positive reaction in the press conference that happened just before the president spoke to what Broward county sheriff Steve Israel had to say but not to what the president had to say. So it will be interesting to see what the reception is to the president when he comes here because people are frustrated that we can fix this and we don’t.”

People want action, not empty words on guns

People want action on this issue. The movement for something to be done about gun violence shifted into gear after Sandy Hook, and nothing has changed in the time since. Americans are tired of Republicans dragging their feet and placing their version of the Second Amendment ahead of protecting innocent lives. The White House has said nothing about Trump meeting with the families, but that he wants to meet with government officials.

The White House is going to try to keep Trump as far away from the general public as possible. If Trump meets with any family members, they will be vetted first to see if they are Trump supporters. The whole visit will be tightly controlled, and anyone who is expecting real action from Trump will be disappointed.

Trump’s empty suit act bombed today because Americans want a president who will get things done, not a reality TV star pretending to care and lead.
